Organized Chaos

Ok, maybe I was wrong about the LHC.

Another potential scenario, possibly as likely as Godzilla.  Now say, something terrible goes wrong; theoretical physics is thrown right out the window and this thing somehow throws off the earth’s rotation, or better yet its orbit around the sun.  Alternate ending: earth drifts off into space, and we all go buy space heaters and winter coats today….then Godzilla attacks

mariodonini:

The LHC first beam goes live tomorrow. Fermilab is throwing a First Beam Pajama Party tomorrow. No joke. Full power tests (7 TeV!) won’t start until later in October, so no destruction on Wednesday. But at some point after this, a black hole will be created, one that will (eventually) devour the universe. This much I know.

How do I know this? Why did I change my mind about this? Well, the way I see it, sooner or later, we are were going to figure out time travel. And if we had figured it out, someone would have come back by now. The fact that no one has = there is no future. Because a black hole destroyed it. Totally. Or, you know, we destroyed the planet with nuclear weapons. Or the global climate crisis eventually rendered the planet uninhabitable. Or Godzilla. But no, definitely a black hole.

Let the responses begin…

Update: this is not a response to Erik’s post. I think we posted these at the same time.
